“Know a poem when you see one”…? Sounds like a serious warning. I think all this advising should start with: you are a reader and it means a lot, rather than a “know thy enemy” opening line. It seems to me that the first shy encounters with poetry are like patting a lion in a cage. The good thing is that people really want to touch the fur, even if they won’t admit it.
