Sharon, if you're still reading, will you say more about how the homebirths influenced your poetics despite the fact that you have not written poems about the births? I often say that my children, even when not the subject matter of my poems, radically affected my writing. Wondering how this works in your case?

Wonderful piece, Rachel! It sounds like, within all of these roles, you've found what truly matters--yourself.
Don't let anyone scare you about homebirths: my sons two sons were born at home. I can't say I've written a single poem about either birth, but nothing has influenced my politics or poetics more.
And I'm a soccer-mom-poet-etc. too ... but a big normal-looking FREAK : )
Happiest wishes for the upcoming birth!

Rachel,
Great post. I love the fact that you are hesitant to call yourself a "poet", instead embracing the "soccer mom" side of you, all the while remaining a "poet." It reminds me of Duchamp's silence, when he "quit" being an "artist," instead preferring to be a "breather" or a "chess player", of course all the while making art. I'm for any strategy that debunks any cliches about artists and poets.

Well then! I'd love to see the poems your students write about their reactions to your homebirth. That ought to bring up all sorts of stuff for folks, eh? You are a woman first and foremost, a maverick, a poet, and a deliciously passionate freak! I'm thrilled to be a part of your circle.
