I think people are more interested in writing poetry than reading it, which in it's own right is pretty cool actually:) Sort of the opposite of novels...

Kwame--
Your idea of assigning a single-authored book of poems is brilliant. Even in college. That sort of thing would just go a long way. My only doubt is whether poetry should be taught in schools at all, since it often does so much damage when it's taught (most often) badly. Maybe it's better that it be encouraged as an extra-curricular activity, like drama, or sports.

More poetry in bars. More gods in poetry. More poets who read novels and can therefore comparatively realize just how boring most poetry is. More poets who "perform" good poetry. More poets in marketing departments. More poetry sound bites. More entertainment in poetry. Fewer stationary trees.

Re: Promoting poetry
Alerting folks to the fact that they can say "No" to a particular poem/poet without feeling that they are "missing the point" or "don't get it." The more people say "No" to one style of poetics actually opens the door for them to say "Yes!" to a different school of poetry.
Re: The Poet's Cottage
If everyone who ever used a poem to help them land a date sent you $1, you would have plenty nuff funds.
