I was a student of Sarah's at the Makor Center in NYC. Within those constraints I had the privilege to know her as a person of joy, courage, intellect, generosity, wit, flesh and bone, curiosity and life. And my gosh, what a wonderful talent, what a wonderful poet, what a gifted teacher! Almost certainly everyone who knew Sarah fell in love a little. I did. What a loss.

I just stumbled upon this site while casting about on the net as the anniversary of Sarah's death approaches. Sarah was one of my dearest friends from high school, and we'd made plans to meet last summer just a week before her death. I am thrilled to see how her immense talent continues to resound, though bitterly sad that she isn't able to hear it herself. What a profound loss of a poet and a true friend.

Alicia,
Hope you received your Dark Horse by now. Precisely my points in article, as you'll see....even if I confess to a fascination with people's lives too. It's when that's INSTEAD of attention to the work.
regards,
Eva

Alicia, thank you for telling us all about this book. I would certainly never have encountered it otherwise. It arrived yesterday from Amazon. Heartbreaking in so many ways. Susan Z.

Thanks for the link, Doug. It is a tantalizing conversation. Very interesting about the title of Longing Distance...
Europe is on a different set up than VHS... but I do appreciate the kind offer!

Doug, I'd love to see the interview. Is it something I can access from your website? If so, where?
Eva, thanks for dropping by. I'm looking forward to the Dark Horse piece. Actually, I had mentioned to her that I thought I heard Plath's "Mushrooms" in "Destroying Angel," and she seemed pleased I had picked up on that influence. We had a brief exchange about Plath's genius for form and about how it was a shame that her control and skill is under discussed, if at all. It is always the Life (and the Death) that dominates. I hope this does not also happen to Hannah's work. Unfortunately, there is such a mythology around women poets and suicide, one as ancient as Sappho.

Thanks Alicia for these important points on distinguishing the collection from memoir. Aside from the article on Sarah I'm doing for the next issue of Dark Horse - an overview of both Sarah's books, and her monograph on Plath and formalism - I'm also writing something on her for Contemporary Poetry Review. Spotted interview, D.H., thanks too.
