It's nice to see a reference to James Dickey--surely his reputation has hit something of a nadir and is due for reevaluation. I for one love "The Sheep Child" Thanks for this...

Hi, Daisy—On your recommendation, I’ll try to find these poems. Here are two books about poetry that are impressing me at the moment. James Longenbach’s "The Art of the Poetic Line" discusses the dynamic relationship between syntax and line in a way that even I can follow. Here’s an excerpt:
http://www.poems.com/special_features/prose/essay_longenbach2.php
And Helen Vendler’s "Our Secret Discipline: Yeats and Lyric Form" has almost convinced me she is capable of Georgie’s “automatic writing”, channeling Yeats as he made formal and sonic decisions about some of his greatest poems. This is slow reading for me, but intensely interesting stuff. Here’s a review of Vendler’s book:
http://www.boston.com/ae/books/articles/2008/02/17/the_anatomy_of_yeatss_inventions/
Thanks--
