It was simple: the original poem, played out of a large television into a bar full of cringing people who had come to see the ceremony, but who hadn't had the foresight to settle up by the end of the inaugural address. The addition of plentiful disbelieving laughter, frustrated groans, and occasional shocked silences from the semi-captive audience added a touching human element to the otherwise bloodless affair. What the avant-garde really needs now is a version of American Idol for poets.
