Oh, and yeah, the peanut butter poem has changed a bit too. Ehem, I think it's better left to our imaginations where that peanut butter's gone....

I also heard PMP at the Where the Wind Shifts reading at Moe's. How dare he subvert the ethnic and gender stereotypes we all depend on! If you don't know what a maquiladora is you ought to try workin in on. Beats teaching creative writing any day.

Hey Rich, I am pretty sure that "Commercial Break" has changed from Pepper Spray to My Kill Adore Him. The version here definitely nails it.

Thanks Tara, yeah I didn't "translate" the title because I thought I was already "giving away" too much! Hopefully people readers will be interested in finding out what a maquilodora is.

Also, I had to look up this thing about Tim Hardaway. I though it was because he's little, in comparison to the other NBA players Pompa mentions: Zo, Manute Bol, Shaq, and what that means in terms of masculinity and the showers!

great post barbara!

i sat next to paul at a Wind Shifts pre-dinner reading. don't tell him this, but after he left the table to head to the reading, i stole his fork! i decided the best way to worship paul's fork was to use it every day, for every meal. and, of course, i've never washed it. which is to say, i love paul's work too!

i reviewed his Pepper Spray here:

I loves me some Paul Martinez Pompa. I read a poem of his about peanut butter and I'm not sure I'll ever be the same. That one and "Commercial Break" make Pompa my favorite snarky bastard since Templeton the Rat. I am picking up this book and diving into it, next chance I get.

I heard read "Shower Stall Baller", and it blew me away. I rarely hear a man exercise such sarcasm and hyperbole to address and challenge ideas of masculinity. He has such wit. I've been waiting for this since I read his chapbook "Pepper Spray", and I'm excited it's finally here. Also, isn't it just brilliant that the title is a take on "maquiladora"? He just keeps turning the nuances over in the words and issues like a Rubik's Cube on a mission.

Paul Martinez Pompa will be performing from his work on September 24 at 1:30 PM at the
Rafael Cintron-Ortiz Latino Cultural Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago, as part of the Siglo XXI IUPLR Conference at UIC. The theme of the conference is "The State of Latino Studies." This will be the first of a number or readings Paul will be giving both in the Chicago area and around the country. On September 24, he'll be joined by Jacob Saenz, another fine Chicago-based poet, whose work has appeared widely, included in POETRY magazine.
