This was the Flickr photo that listed Manong Al alongside poet Ruth Weiss and muralist John Rampley as 'Beat-era legends.'

I'd put Robles in the same lineage as Bob Kaufman, San Francisco jazz poets more considered with orature and using poetry to connect people in group settings like cafes, barbershops, pool halls and wakes.

Kaufman's preference for recitation over publication may be why he gets left out of so much Beat history. I hope that posts like this will insure that Robles place in San Francisco, Jazz, Beat and American Poetry continues to be noted and documented.

Al was as fine a person as poet. His nephew Tony Robles also a poet is equally an activist for human rights here. This is one great family.

Hi Carlos, good to see your comment here. Yes, Robles was (and will continue to be) a huge influence on so many different kinds of artists, not just poets. As for jazz and poetry, I know he participated in many local jazz performances, and in this way, makes me think of Al Young, Lawson Inada, and Amiri Baraka in performance.

Thanks for your comment, Francisco. You know, I recently read something that listed Robles as a Beat poet, which I hadn't previously considered, but now that I'm thinking about it, I'm starting to agree that he was one.

Thank you Barbara... Manong Al was one of a kind - his influence on a whole generation of writers, artists, musicians and free spirits is immeasurable. He was indeed - the jazz poet laureate of Manilatown. All of San Francisco was blessed with his special gift.

Hi Barbara:
Thank you for bringing attention to a side of San Francisco's literary scene that has gone too often overlooked.
