The Harvest C(r)op October 11, 2009: How to relate the everyday to poetry while in the act of being the poem. Working my way underneath this city I love, I latch onto a dragon's back circumnavigating the subway system during the week. (more...)
Tony Robles, ‘Filipino Building Maintenance Company’ (Poor Press Publications, 2009) October 10, 2009: Last weekend, I participated in a spectacle of a Filipino American History event at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, where, for the entire day, admission was free courtesy of Target Stores. Interesting, this corporate support of an otherwise invisible but ubiquitous population and our obscure commemorative month. In the noisy museum lobby, a [...]
Poetry is dead! Long live poetry! October 9, 2009: Writers keep writing about the end of writing. The English department is declining. Comparative literature has died. Book reviews? Print journalism? Poetry? There’s just one problem: no one gets into details. I want to know exactly when and why literature, and poetry in particular, will croak. Will it happen in bed or on the street? [...]
Making Room for Poetry October 8, 2009: In the past year I've talked about poetry with a few hundred classroom teachers and heard one overwhelmingly common complaint. Given the demands of required texts and standardized tests, there just isn't enough time for poetry. One teacher drew the analogy of designing a curriculum and furnishing a house: "You start with the big pieces [...]
Tara Betts, ‘Arc & Hue’ (Willow Books, 2009) October 8, 2009: [Hi all, I have invited the super prolific poet and reviewer Craig Santos Perez to guest post here. Below is his review of Tara Betts's just released first collection of poems, Arc & Hue.] Arc & Hue (Willow Books, 2009) by Tara Betts 90 pp. $15, paper. ISBN: 978-0-9819208-7-0. review by Craig Santos Perez The title poem of Tara [...]
Internal Data October 8, 2009: Several days ago my 22-month old daughter, who has taken to occasionally placing tiny imaginary animals in one’s hand by holding her thumb and index finger a quarter inch apart and identifying the animal being handed over (bunny, zebra, kitty), strolled up to me, held her fingers just apart in my palm, and said “daddy”. (more...)

The Cultural Workhorse October 6, 2009: Hello Harriet, glad to join the blog-o-sphere. Looking forward to spilling secrets and divinity on words-works-wonders, many thanks to Travis Nichols for inviting me to the party. That being said, my first posting starts on a sad note, but a life note all the same. Suzanne Fiol, the founder and artistic director of Issue Project Room, has died. [...]
ADFEMPO Repo 1 October 6, 2009: Okay, back after much silence and some sickness. After the wonderful Adfempo Conference. After the settling in of a new roommate. After joy and wanting. (okay, not sure what that’s about but there it is.) So there are a few blogs rooming around in my head, and in word on my computer. That, and audio and video I hope to upload. (more...)
Yoga for Losers II October 5, 2009: I was in Maine last summer and Jennifer Moxley asked me why I didn’t get involved with the language poets since I was that age. I don’t even know how to answer that question simply. I actually get asked this a lot. Like there’s the boat going by. From another generation you might think it was a class. (more...)
