“Is prose-poetry a bit of a slut?”

By Harriet Staff

That’s what Caroline Mary Crew over at Flotsam suggested in a piece examining the prose poem’s “inherent identity crisis.” Through an analysis of “Deer Dancer” by Joy Harjo, Crew suggests that the prose poem perhaps isn’t as promiscuous as she may seem, but simply free-spirited. She’s not sure if that makes her good writing, though:

“If we’re going to be more intellectual about this, can a form that attempts to straddle those two genres of writing separated since Socrates ever actual succeed in defining itself? And more importantly, can such a form ever succeed as literature?”
