Our Men Do Not Belong to Us
Since the premiere of Beyoncé’s visual album, “Lemonade,” the public and media organizations alike have clamored to learn more about Warsan Shire, the 27-year-old poet whose work features prominently on the album. Shire is the author of three collections: Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth (2011); Her Blue Body (2015); and Our Men Do Not Belong to Us (2014), one of the chapbooks in the Seven New Generation African Poets box set. Edited by Kwame Dawes and Chris Abani, Seven New Generation African Poets was published by Slapering Hol Press in association with the African Poetry Book Fund, Prairie Schooner, and the Poetry Foundation’s Harriet Monroe Poetry Institute.
