The Brooklyn Rail solicited friends and colleagues (all of whom are noted scholars, artists, critics and writers) to come up with their top five books for summer reading. Some choices are predictable (there’s lots of hefty literature by melancholy Russians on the lists) others are eclectic (the poetry ranges from T.S. Eliot to C.A. Conrad).

Here’s a sample list from writer and poet Eileen Myles:

1. The Frank Poems
by C. A. Conrad

2. The Professor and Other Writings
by Terry Castle

3. The Wild, Wild East: An American Art Critic’s Adventures in China
by Barbara Pollack

4. Coma
by Pierre Guyotat

5. La Bâtarde
by Víolette Leduc
