The forever falling man

By Harriet Staff

Nobel Laureate Wislawa Szymborska grasps with words what photographer Richard Drew captured in his  now famous “Photograph from September 11.”  Both the photograph and the poem depict a man falling from the World Trade Center Towers as though time has stopped.

“Photograph from September 11”

They jumped from the burning floors —

one, two, a few more,
higher, lower.
The photograph halted them in life,
and now keeps them
above the earth toward the earth.

Each is still complete,
with a particular face
and blood well hidden . . .

Szymborska’s poem continues at NPR…but doesn’t quite ever end.
