Stephen Dunn's Poetry on Barns

By Harriet Staff

This news for Maryland residents comes via the Chicago Tribune:

Barn murals in Frostburg and Mount Savage will feature the work of two local poets -- one of them Pulitzer Prize-winner Stephen Dunn.

Cumberland artist Bill Dunlap has already started painting the side of a barn at Carey Run Forge blacksmith studio near Frostburg and plans to begin work this summer on a barn at Cedar Rock Farm in Mount Savage.

The Carey Run Forge painting will include a poem by Dunn, and the Cedar Rock Farm painting will include a poem by Frostburg resident Nina Forsythe, Dunlap said.

Both paintings are part of the University of Maryland's Poetry and Art in Rural Maryland project, which combines large-scale murals and poetry painted on structures in rural settings across the state.

Dunlap, who is the commissioned artist for the project, has completed murals in five Maryland counties so far, most recently at the Lucy School in Middletown, which offers an arts-based education program for children ages 3 to third grade.
