James Sloan Gibbons

1810–1892
James Sloan Gibbons was an abolitionist, Quaker, and cousin to Horace Greeley. Married to fellow Quaker, abolitionist, and founder of the Women’s Prison Association, Abigail Hopper, their home in New York is recognized as a Manhattan station on the Underground Railroad. Gibbons is also famous for writing the lyrics to the Civil War call to arms, “Three Hundred Thousand More.”
