Poet Details

Poet Pramila Venkateswaran grew up in Bombay. She earned a BA at Sophia College in Bombay, an MA at Bombay University, and a PhD at George Washington University.
 
Venkateswaran grounds her poems in playful sensory imagery and explores the philosophical implications of, among other issues, yoga practices. She is the author of several poetry collections, including Thirtha (2002), Draw Me Inmost (2010), and Trace (2011). Her work is featured in the anthologies A Chorus for Peace: A Global Anthology of Poetry by Women (2002), en(compass) (2005), and Indivisible: An Anthology of Contemporary South Asian American Poetry (2010).
 
Venkateswaran is the recipient of writing residencies at Hedgebrook and Norcroft and was chosen as the poet laureate of Suffolk County, Long Island, in 2013. She has taught at Nassau Community College and SUNY-Stony Brook and lives in New York State.
