River Song Quintet
Thursday, July 24th, 7:00 PM
61 West Superior Street
A wide array of collaborations between Los Angeles based River Song Quintet and Ohio poet David Baker. The three-part event includes semi-improvisatory interplay between David Baker and River Song Quintet guitarist Gregory Uhlmann, followed by the premier performance of “Scavenger Loop,” Baker’s lyric sequence which blends elements of the pastoral elegy with eco-poetic narratives, scored by Gregory Uhlmann for River Song Quintet. The evening’s concluding piece is a six-movement song cycle, composed by Uhlmann for River Song, using Baker’s poems as libretto. This special event will mark the premier of several pieces composed specifically for this evening of music and poetry.
This exhibition presents photographs and ephemera from the poet Jun Fujita (1888-1963). Fujita is an English-language tanka poet who published regularly in Poetry during the 1920s. The first Japanese-American photojournalist, he is responsible for the most famous photos of the Eastland disaster, the Chicago race riots of 1919, and the St. Valentine’s Day massacre, among others. This show will explore his lesser-known landscapes.
