Literary criticism as a digital audio object
Futurepoem’s ongoing project of inviting authors to respond creatively or critically to their books is one of the most inventive uses of the web for re-imagining literary criticism. This week, the always surprising and intelligent Sawako Nakayasu created an audio response to two poems by Alan Gilbert. The very notion of an audio response changes the focus of interpretation: instead of thinking through the poem as if the reader were an external force, Nakayasu uses the poem to create a new poetic object, thus suggesting that creative reading is itself is internal to poetry.
