they ken ilka gadge on the bowe
bi the soond o thir foot-fa   
glisk the skyrie lamp
hingin on the smittie ceilin
a spreckelt green plaunt is deein
a wandert bairn greets   
aneath thon laich an gowstie lift
at lang an last the onfa.

Jean Follain (1903–1971) was born in Canisy, in Normandy. His first book of poems is La Main chaude (1933). He published eight subsequent volumes of poetry, as well as prose work.
