We had heard that Mr. Stein was selected for his boldness, and he proved his bravery in battle by charging through the room, an office chair bundled in his arms, shouting enthusiastically, “Let’s do this!” But what was this? An inviting circle of couches were arranged at one end; people perched expectantly on desktops and filing cabinets. Was it a living room or an office, a reading or a round table? People were trying not to use the words “literary salon,” yet you felt them fluttering about the room. “Isn’t this the New York apartment you always hoped you’d one day have?” a guest next to me swooned, as Donald Antrim, in a casually unbuttoned shirt and summer suit, took the seat at center stage . . .
