Nobel Laureate Wislawa Szymborska grasps with words what photographer Richard Drew captured in his now famous "Photograph from September 11." Both the photograph and the poem depict a man falling from the World Trade Center Towers as though time has stopped.
"Photograph from September 11"
They jumped from the burning floors —
one, two, a few more,
higher, lower.
The photograph halted them in life,
and now keeps them
above the earth toward the earth.
Each is still complete,
with a particular face
and blood well hidden . . .
Szymborska's poem continues at NPR...but doesn't quite ever end.
