Victoria Martinez: Frente a la vida / Facing Life Exhibition Opening

Join us for a reception and artist talk to celebrate the opening of the exhibition Frente a la vida / Facing Life. The event will feature a conversation between writer Nicole Kaack and artist Victoria Martinez, followed by a reception. 

Frente a la vida / Facing Life is an exhibition of murals and ceramic paintings by artist Victoria Martinez that responds to the life and work of Peruvian poet and activist Magda Portal (1900–1989). Drawing on Portal’s first book of poetry, Una esperanza i el mar (Hope and the Sea, 1927), Martinez’s paintings in Frente a la vida / Facing Life feature motifs borrowed from Portal’s body of work. Portal’s elegiac writing captured life’s dualities, integrating the hardships of incarceration in authoritarian Peru and deportation with the embodied ecstasies and anguishes of motherhood and romantic love. Rivers, tears, and the sea represent rupture and rebirth, plurality and unity, captivity and independence. 

Extending these symbolic images, Martinez washes the wall with a painted panorama and floods the windows with transparent fields of color, heightening the permeability of the Poetry Foundation’s architecture and transforming it into an expressive, abstracted terrain. Bridging the near-century between today and the publication of Portal’s first book of poetry, Una esperanza i el mar (Hope and the Sea, 1927), Martinez memorializes Portal’s vital work and invites us to reflect upon change and that which endures.

NICOLE KAACK is an independent writer, editor, and curator with a background in performance production and archives.

VICTORIA MARTINEZ is an interdisciplinary artist who conserves culture through painting, site-specific installation, and mixed-media fiber projects.

MAGDA PORTAL An award-winning writer, Portal was a founder of Peru’s American Popular Revolutionary Alliance (APRA). Entangling her political and poetic practices, she advocated a radical literature centered on Indigenous peoples and the working class, in whom she saw the roots of Latin American cultural identity. Her elegiac writing captures life’s dualities, integrating the austerity of Peru under authoritarian rule with her own internal landscape—one shaped as much by the hardships of deportation and incarceration as by the embodied ecstasies and anguishes of motherhood and romantic love.

Frente a la vida / Facing Life es una exhibición de murales y pinturas en cerámica por la artista Victoria Martínez que responde a la vida y el trabajo de la poeta y activista peruana Magda Portal (1900-1989). Inspiradas en Una esperanza i el mar (Hope and the Sea, 1927), el primer libro de poesía de Portal, las pinturas de Martínez en Frente a la vida / Facing Life presentan motivos tomados de la obra de Portal. La escritura elegíaca de Portal capturó las dualidades de la vida, integrando las dificultades del encarcelamiento en el Perú autoritario y la deportación con los éxtasis y angustias encarnados de la maternidad y el amor romántico. Ríos, lágrimas, y el mar representan la ruptura y el renacimiento, la pluralidad y la unidad, el cautiverio y la independencia. 

Ampliando estas imágenes simbólicas, Martínez baña la pared con un panorama pintado e inunda las ventanas con campos transparentes de color, acentuando la permeabilidad de la arquitectura de la Poetry Foundation y transformándola en un terreno expresivo y abstracto. Abarcando casi un siglo entre hoy y la publicación de Una esperanza i el mar, Martínez conmemora la obra vital de Portal y nos invita a reflexionar sobre el cambio y lo que perdura.

NICOLE KAACK es escritora, editora y curadora independiente con antecedentes en producción de espectáculos y archivos.

VICTORIA MARTÍNEZ es una artista interdisciplinaria que preserva la cultura mediante la pintura, instalación específica según el sitio, y proyectos textiles de técnica mixta.

MAGDA PORTAL, escritora galardonada, fue uno de los fundadores de Alianza Popular Revolucionaria Americana (APRA). Entremezclando sus prácticas políticas y poéticas, ella abogaba por una literatura enfocada en los pueblos indígenas y la clase trabajadora, en quienes ella veía las raíces de la identidad cultural latinoamericana. Su escritura elegíaca captura las dualidades de la vida, integrando la austeridad del Perú bajo un gobierno autoritario con su propio paisaje interno—que fue moldeado tanto por las dificultades de la deportación y la encarcelación como por los embelesamientos y las angustias corporeizados de la maternidad y el amor romántico.
