In a Station by a Larkin Poem
Philip Larkin is in the news again, this time in poems-set-into-the-concourse-at-Hull's-Paragon-Interchange form. See this, from This is Hull and East Riding's website:
EXCERPTS from Philip Larkin's poetry have been set into the concourse at Hull's Paragon Interchange.
Five slate roundels, each one metre wide bearing lines from the poet's works, were unveiled by five different people yesterday.
They have been placed at the base of the statue of Larkin, which was unveiled exactly a year ago to mark the 25th anniversary of the poet's death.
Professor Graham Chesters, vice chair of the Philip Larkin Society, said: "The roundels give the people of Hull the chance to stop and read something and, like other poetry, Larkin's work provokes thought.
"We hope it will also prompt people to look up his work and read more."
Alan Johnson, MP for Hull West and Hessle, unveiled one of the inscriptions.
He said he had always been a fan of the poet and he regretted not meeting him.
He said: "Culture has an important place in this city and having these quotations will help to introduce people to Larkin's work.
"Larkin said Hull was an 'untalking, out-of-reach place,' that's what he liked about it and that's what I like about it."
