2020 Pew Center Fellowships Awarded to Two Philadelphia-Based Poets
Marissa Johnson-Valenzuela and Airea D. Matthews are among 41 new recipients of $75,000 fellowships from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, which recognizes the "Philadelphia region's artists and cultural organizations for exceptional programs, events, and artistic work." A project based on Ross Gay's book-length poem, Be Holding, has also received Pew support. From the Pew Center's Executive Director, Paula Marincola:
Acutely aware of the challenges artists and institutions are now facing, we are humbled and inspired by their efforts to persevere and adapt to the conditions of a global pandemic. Our grants affirm and bolster the sector in continuing its essential work: nurturing creative practice and presenting innovative public programs that deeply connect us to one another as they illuminate diverse personal experiences and some of today’s most pressing issues.
