A Man Pushes Two Hills
Translated By Arvind Krishna Mehrotra
Translated from the Hindi
1956
A man pushes two hills with his elbows.
Measuring the distance from east to west in one step,
he moves forward.
The tall grass is so tall it almost touches the sky.
Through it he advances on his knees,
joining his evening to his morning.
Why, then,
are the wires of two clouds
entangling him?
