Quarterly Report
Saturday my wife lured me to a party
not a launch or lunch
but a real party with people mixing
drinks and dancing
all within the context of an ocean theme
including one woman wearing
a futuristic snorkel
another guy jacked in a grass skirt that felt
to me a bit racist
something was odd about
all those folks downing surfer ales
and a concoction called Dark and Stormy
actual people dancing
to actual music like “Kokomo”
and “The Tide Is High”
which come to think of it drift
upon two of the more eternal refrains
I realized at the buffet
draped over with a replica fishing net
these people were not talking
about tech at all
at no point did they glorify
our work just spoke
of lifeguards and pirates and slickered seamen
so by way of introduction
I told a few wenches and scalawags
about our Cape of Good Hope app
in development how soon they’ll delight in sailing
a digital galleon through crushing storms
but like the others they’d checked their phones
at the front door
buried them in a plastic treasure chest
full of Swedish fish
with other blockchain plinths
so they could all drink
freely and sway like luminescent plankton
under winking lights.
