Arielle Taitano Lowe

Arielle Taitano Lowe (she/her) is the first Chamoru woman born and raised in Guam to publish a full-length poetry book. Ocean Mother (University of Guam Press, 2024) is her debut poetry collection. She is a Sablan from Agat and a “Churot” Taitano from Mangilao. As Denise Low of Indigenous Nations Poets writes, “Lowe’s first book of verse, Ocean Mother, is filled with currents that move like water, crossing bloodlines, seas, timelines, and histories. Lowe’s words cast spells of healing stories as traditions realign in these pages.”

Lowe’s poems have been featured in the Academy of American Poets’s Poem-A-Day series, as well as anthologies such as Indigenous Pacific Islander Eco-Literatures (University of Hawai‘i Press, 2022) and Indigenous Literatures from Micronesia (University of Hawai‘i Press, 2019), among others. She has received support from fellowships with the Academy of American Poets, Indigenous Nations Poets, Storyknife, and the East-West Center.

Lowe earned a BA in Chamorro studies and English literature in 2016, and an MA in English literature in 2019 from the University of Guam. She is a PhD student in English at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. She resides in O‘ahu, Hawai‘i, where she studies traditional healing arts and Pacific storytelling.
