Albert Malikongwa
1930—2011
Botswanan poet and playwright Albert G.T.K. Malikongwa was born in the village of Mayebe Nswazwi and educated at St. Joseph’s College and Roma College. Employed as a teacher for 13 years, Malikongwa studied public administration at the University of York. He eventually returned to Botswana to work for the government, retiring as a member of the Customary Court of Appeal.
Malikongwa composed his poems in both English and Ikalanga. His poetry collections in English include The Smell of Cowdung (1997) and The Dawn (1978). His plays include Chief Mengwe IV (1996). He received the Presidential Award for Meritorious Service in 1999 from Festus Mogae, a former president of Botswana.
