Hussein Barghouthi

1954—2002

Hussein Barghouthi was a Palestinian poet, writer, essayist, critic, lyricist, playwright, and philosopher. His best-known work, The Blue Light, was translated into English by Fady Joudah in 2023 by Seagull Books. He was a professor of philosophy and cultural studies at Birzeit University in Palestine and professor of literature critique and theater at Al-Quds University. 

Born in the West Bank city of Ramallah, Barghouthi was a prominent figure in the Palestinian struggle for independence and self-determination. Throughout his career, Barghouthi was associated with various political organizations and movements advocating for Palestinian rights, including grassroots activism, organizing protests, and raising awareness about the plight of Palestinians living under occupation. Barghouthi’s dedication to the Palestinian struggle earned him respect both domestically and internationally.

Barghouthi earned a BA in English literature from Birzeit University and an MA and PhD in comparative literature from the University of Washington–Seattle. He died in 2002.
